In Silence

In Silence

This project was photographed in several abandoned army camps. One camp is located in the silent forest of Jerusalem, and two other camps in residence neighborhoods in Haifa, that were built during the British Mandate period.

I find myself, going back, again and again, to these lifeless locations, where time doesn’t exist. I’m searching for traces of memory, traces of information about people and forgotten days. I try to find the story behind the empty buildings and find myself going back in time and daydreaming. Into my mind come scenes from movies (horror and war), memories from the holocaust and the constant thoughts about the continuous danger of extinction.

The out of focus cancels all connection to the place and time, and gives the freedom to daydream.
I chose to use Instant film (Polaroid type 84) in order to intensify the experience of my being in desolated places. I feel that there is a complete correlation between the Polaroid chemicals reacting to create a clear, yet unattached to a specific time nor place, image, and my own emotions, rising and creating a specific, yet unexplainable, sensation in me.
